Wine
The Ferranti vineyards are located around the area of Gandesa, Catalonia, Spain. Gandesa is the capital of the wine region Terra Alta also known as Catellania, a name dating back to it's medieval status as a fiefdom held by the order of the knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Click here for a map of the area.
Winemaking in Terra Alta can be traced back to the twelfth century when the Templars settled in the region although in times of the ancient Romans, the road from Zaragoza to Tortosa passed through the area, and is probably when grape growing was first introduced.
Terra Alta is the southernmost D.O. in Catalonia, having the hottest climate and the lowest rainfall and as the name indicates it is literally the "highlands" of Catalonia. The Ferranti vineyards are situated in an area of great natural beauty, between the mountain ranges of Pandols and Cavalls and which are features in many of Picasso's paintings that he captured during summers that he spent in the region.
Ferranti vineyards are located at altitudes in excess of 350 meters surrounded by the mountain ranges, which reach a height of 950m above sea level. Ferranti vines consist of Garnatax, Carignan and Syrah. A dry wind known as el Cierzo from the valley of the river Ebro is influential in keeping humidity low and thus protecting the vines from disease.
